9th July 2008 - WEST
YEARS OF THEIR LIVES |
i found this a bit butt still nice lol.
Sunday Mirror, Jun 1, 2008 by LISA O'CONNOR
E-mail Print Link WESTLIFE are planning a massive bash tonight to celebrate
their triumphant Croke Park gig after 10 years on the road.
The lads have taken over the trendy Floridita Bar and invited everyone ever
involved with their success to help them celebrate.
Thousands of fans are expected to follow them from Croker to the Cuban-style bar
near Abbey Street, central Dublin, in the hope of catching a glimpse of their
heroes.
A source said: "They are having a party for friends and family after the gig...it'll
be a hooley.
"Expect to see anyone who is anyone there...although Brian McFadden probably
won't make it.. well he is in Australia."
Normal EUR60 tickets for tonight's sell-out 80,000 gig were changing hands for
up to EUR400 on the web.
The lads declared playing the GAA citadel as the pinnacle of their career which
started when they managed to secure a coveted spot on 2FM's summer road show,
The Beat on the Street, when it played Sligo town.
Former publicist Barry Hartigan said: "I remember I was backstage at The Beat on
the Street and two young fellas approached me.
"I gave them a few pointers, then out of the blue one of the lads asked if I
knew Louis Walsh.
"I told them them he was worth talking to and was a very good manager. The rest
is history."

9th June 2008 - Spoilt
for choice |
Spoilt for choice
With summer upon us there is a multitude of events drawing large crowds at
different venues around the country. Last weekend tens of thousands attended the
Dublin Docklands Maritime Festival where they could view tall ships, watch a
variety of street entertainers and browse or buy at the market set up for the
occasion. Similar large crowds headed for the Phoenix Park where the Bloom
Garden Festival was being held.
The more energetic were also catered for. More than 40,000 women took part in
26th Flora Woman's Mini-Marathon in Dublin. The winner of the 10k race was
Annette Kealy from Howth in Dublin, in 35 minutes 45 seconds. She also
celebrated her 40h birthday on the day. The oldest person taking part was
Maureen Armstrong (83), from Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Most of those taking part
were also raising funds for their favourite charity and it was estimated that
some €10m was raised.
The Cork City Marathon also took place on the Bank Holiday. It drew some 8,000
competitors, including Catherine O'Regan (72), from Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford.
The winner was Roy Fahey from Leevale Running Club in a time of 2:33.55. A new
world record was set on the day with John Meade and Colin Carroll, attached at
the ankle and wrist, taking 15 minutes off the previous best time for a
"three-legged" marathon. Their time of 3:25.39 smashed the record set in London
ten years ago.
Those interested in attending concerts could have watched Westlife at Croke Park
last Sunday evening. This weekend Radiohead played two concerts at Malahide
Castle, on Friday and Saturday nights, while Bon Jovi performed at Punchestown
Racecourse on Saturday night.

3rd June 2008 - From
Croker to a cracker of an after-show bash |
IWESTLIFE celebrated their
triumphant Croke Park concert over the weekend by partying into the early hours
with friends and family at an exclusive after-show party.
The bash took place at Floridita on Dublin's Abbey Street. The band was joined
by friends and family, including manager Louis Walsh and ex-Ireland soccer
international David O'Leary.
Band members Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Shane Filan and Mark Feehily made a quick
dash to the Four Seasons Hotel after the gig to scrub up before arriving at the
after show party.
The nightclub was decked out in Westlife regalia, including an ice sculpture
commemorating the band's 10 years at the top of the charts.
Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, whose daughter Georgina is married to band member
Nicky Byrne, seemingly had enough enjoyment for one night and headed home after
the concert. But Mr Ahern's ex-wife Miriam was among the revellers, as was his
daughter Cecelia and seven die-hard Westlife fans from Manchester who
gatecrashed the event after they found out the party's secret location.

1st June 2008 - Westlife
plan concert at Croke Park (article dated 2002) |
I I was googling westlife last
night and came across this article written in 2008 and its about Westlife dream
to play at Croke Park so with them performing them today i thought it fitting to
post the article..
-------------------------------------------------
Irish pop stars Westlife have
announced that they will play their first stadium gig in Ireland in Croke Park
next year.
According to The Star newspaper, the announcement was made after Lord Henry
Mountcharles revealed that he would not allow so-called manufactured bands such
as Westlife or Six to play at his castle grounds in Slane.
Westlife and Six manager Louis Walsh has insisted that Westlife have no interest
in playing at Slane saying that the Croke Park gig would be a "dream come true"
for the band.
He added that the planned Croke Park event would be "a far better venue than a
field in Meath".
Westlife are currently in the US, making a second attempt to conquer the
American charts.
Stereophonics are headlining this year's Slane concert, which takes place on
Saturday 24 August.

Is Westlifes Croker date
a striking coincidence? |
THE pulses of conspiracy theorists have started racing following the
announcement of Westlifes Croke Park date next summer.
The band is due to take over GAA headquarters on the Sunday of the June Bank
Holiday weekend, which, as every fan knows, is the very day that the Dubs
traditionally make their Croke Park championship debut.
By scheduling major concerts for Croker during the busiest time on the Gaelic
football calendar, could it be that GAA chiefs are taking the threat of a
players strike more seriously than theyre letting on?

28th November 2007 - It'll be very quiet
in Croke Park next Spring (mentions Wl) |
The National League football and hurling finals will be played at provincial
grounds in 2008 as Croke Park will be out of commission for more than nine weeks
due to essential remedial work required on the surface that has come in for
regular criticism in recent years, writes Gavin Cummiskey
The last GAA matches before the work on the pitch begins will be the All-Ireland
club finals on March 17th, ending a busy period of activity at Croke Park that
includes three Six Nations rugby internationals.
The FAI have an international friendly on March 26th with the reopening being
Dublin against Louth in the Leinster football championship on June 8th. The
stadium also stages a Westlife concert on June 1st.
GAA president Nickey Brennan stated the decision was a "once-off" on the advice
of pitch consultants at the Sports Turf Research Institute.
Venues for the football (April 27th) and hurling (April 20th) league finals have
yet to be decided.
The busiest period for GAA headquarters remains the August Bank Holiday weekend
with the finals of the Christy Ring Cup, Nicky Rackard Cup and Tommy Murphy Cup
all scheduled to take place during those few days.
Round three of the All-Ireland football qualifiers are also fixed for that
weekend and - depending on the competing counties - may also be fixed for Croke
Park.
Brennan admitted a string of high-profile draws cannot be planned for. "When you
have a series of draws, games have to be played on a week after week basis. It
is impossible to run a system like that.
"I challenge anybody to come up with a solution to that. I believe we have never
come up with a better system than the present one."
Brennan also pointed to the Wembley surface for last Wednesday's soccer
international between England and Croatia as further evidence that the GAA must
ensure the problems experienced in recent seasons are avoided in 2008.
"We would still be happy (with the pitch). We sat down with STRI (Sports Turf
Research Institute) and took a thorough look at what is needed to be done. The
STRI wanted another window of opportunity."
He went on to describe several "smaller renovation tasks" being better than one
large operation.
In defending the pitch surface in 2006, stadium director Peter McKenna
recommended players do not use blades, rather six studded boots with adjustable
lengths depending on the weather.
"Blades are used by soccer players. We're not trying to make excuses, but there
are contributing factors. It is an organic surface, a natural pitch, and,
depending on different weather conditions, it can be so-so."
The process of verti-draining, whereby spikes are inserted deep into the sod,
can now be employed as the extended timeframe allows the large holes a
sufficient period of recovery. This wouldn't normally occur until after the
All-Ireland finals in October.
Meanwhile, the GAA released their master fixture list for 2008 yesterday. The
gap between the Munster football champions playing in the All-Ireland
quarter-final is six weeks (June 29th to August 10th), but this decision was
attributed to the provincial council who set the schedule for their own
competition. The final is usually in early July.
No provision was made in the fixtures for an International Rules Series or the
interprovincial championship - although Brennan defended this year's
interprovincial competition by noting 200,000 people watched the finals on RTÉ
television.
The central competitions control committee are currently "reviewing" the future
of the interpros.
The opening championship - Sunday, May 11th - sees New York host Leitrim in
Gaelic Park, two Ulster hurling fixtures and Longford meeting Westmeath in the
Leinster senior football championship at Pearse Park.

3 AND EASY AT CROKER;
|
3 AND EASY AT CROKER;
WESTLIFE, NEIL DIAMOND AND CELINE LINED UP FOR CONCERTS
WESTLIFE, Celine Dion and singing legend Neil Diamond will make it THREEsy-peasy
at Croke Park next summer.
Nearly a quarter of a million fans will flock to the Dublin stadium over the
June bank holiday for the biggest weekend of gigs ever staged in the arena.
Westlife yesterday confirmed our exclusive news from last year that they will
celebrate their 10th anniversary with a Croker corker on June 1.
Singer Shane Filan said: "This will be the pinnacle of our careers. We want the
show to go down in history.
"We're thrilled to announce the big night and we're going to make it our best
show ever."
And his sports-mad band mate Nicky Byrne said the show will fulfil a lifetime's
ambition to perform at the home of GAA.
He added: "Every Dubliner dreams of playing at Croke Park so this is something
that I've always wanted to do.
"I am sure at some stage of the show I'll grab a Dublin jersey and pull it on.
It will be an incredible night."
The Irish Daily Mirror also recently revealed Titanic star Celine Dion would
perform her first live show outside America in seven years at Croke Park.
Tickets for her performance are expected to sell out in record time after she
enjoyed a record-breaking five-year residency in Las Vegas.
Completing the terrific trio is Sweet Caroline legend Neil Diamond.
He last thrilled a sell-out crowd at Lansdowne Road two years ago and is still
one of the most popular entertainers in the business.
A Croker insider revealed last night: "We've never staged anything this big
before - it's three consecutive nights of great music.
"We're expecting record sales. Everyone will want to be part of this."
The stars will be following in the footsteps of U2, Robbie Williams and The
Police by performing at the famous venue.
This summer Sting reunited his famous band for a one-off sell-out performance at
the stadium.
