29th December 2007 -Twins steal the show at Westlife clans Late Late

THEIR famous father may be celebrating a musical milestone on national television, but for these two tiny tots nothing was going to stand in the way of a nap.

And looking every inch the doting grandmother Miriam Ahern cradled one of her two twin grandsons as she sat in the audience for the Late Late Show Westlife tribute.

Beside her, first-time mother Georgina Byrne looked on as her popstar husband Nicky celebrated an incredible decade at the top of the pop charts with the Sligo/ Dublin four-piece.

The Taoiseachs twin grandsons Rocco and Jay were born just eight months ago, but theyre already making headlines of their own.

The famous brothers joined their father along with Shane Filan, Kian Egan and Mark Feehily, as well as the bands families for a special tribute show, which is screened tonight.

Six live numbers, with the help of a live studio choir, will celebrate the bands long success. S i m o n C o w e l l , S h a r o n Osbourne, the Sugababes, Paul OGrady, Shayne Ward, the Backstreet Boys and Michael Flatley will also pay homage.

And fellow Irish pop sensation Ronan Keating and manager Louis Walsh will be on hand for a Westlife trip down memory lane.

Of course proud grandfather, Bertie Ahern also dropped by for the pre-recorded programme.

About the Show

Pat Kenny

Westlife

It's a special festive Friday Late Late Show tonight as Pat Kenny presents the four Westlife boys in chat and in song.

Special guests will be in studio to pay tribute to the band, and viewers can expect all the greatest hits as well as some surprise duets.

As they build up to their first Late Late Show tribute, Westlife have never sounded fresher. The secret behind their rejuvenated sound is that they've just recharged their batteries with the longest holiday of their career. "We had nearly four months off and it felt like three years," laughs Nicky. "The break made us realize how much we wanted to start work again. At the end of it I couldn't wait to get back into the studio."

Mark agrees. "It was nice to get back to work. And it's nice to get back to music."

Kian is also pleased to get back to his first love. "I've really missed the pop songs because that's what I really like and grew up listening to." "It felt like a new start," adds Shane.

28th December 2007 -IRISH HEART-THROBS WOW ADORING FANS

12:00 - 28 December 2007

Pop fans were treated to one of the concerts of the year when Irish chart-toppers Westlife announced they were returning to Aberdeen to play a free, intimate gig.

The singers played to 1,500 adoring fans at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference at the Asda Be Live fundraising concert, which went round the country.

The heart-throbs had already wowed thousands with two dates in the Granite City on their Love Tour in April.

But the hysteria from their legion of fans was just as passionate during the autumn gig.

One of the high spots of the show was when Shane, Nicky, Kian and Mark serenaded the crowd with their new single, Home

28th December 2007 -Past their bedtime Westlife's youngest fans caught napping

By Fiach Kelly

THEY have sold millions of albums and sold out concert venues worldwide, but the boys from Westlife had difficulty keeping two of their youngest fans entertained during the filming of their 'Late Late' special tribute show.

Nicky Byrne's children, Rocco and Jay, seemed oblivious to the commotion in RTE studio four and fell 2.gif in the arms of their grandmother, Miriam, instead of listening to their dad and his band mates talk about the group's success over the last 10 years.

The show, which was recorded last Friday but airs tonight, will see the pop supergroup perform a selection of their hits.

They follow in the footsteps of other Irish music giants like Christy Moore and the Dubliners, who also got 'The Late Late Show' tribute treatment in previous years.

Duet

Among the songs the boys from Dublin and Sligo will be performing is a duet with Irish singer Mary Black on the Christmas favourite, 'Walking in the Air'.

And Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, whose daughter Georgina is married to Nicky Byrne, also makes an appearance on the programme, which was recorded hours after his attendance at the Mahon Tribunal last Friday. He is pictured far right with Nicky Byrne.

Mr Ahern's interview with Pat Kenny also deals with the band's career.

"It is a tribute to the band to coincide with the tenth anniversary of their first appearance on the Late Late," an RTE spokesman said yesterday.

"It is one of the special seasonal Late Lates we have each Christmas, and we've had many."

Previous specials have featured Irish stars like Maureen Potter, The Chieftains, The Clancy Brothers and sporting icons like Paul McGrath.

Joining band members Shane Filan, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Nicky Byrne in studio will be guests who helped them through their career, including Louis Walsh and Ronan Keating.

Other friends, including Sharon Osbourne, the Sugababes, Shane Ward, the Backstreet Boys, Paul O'Grady, Michael Flatley and Simon Cowell, will send their best wishes to the boys in recorded video messages.

The show has been planned for months by the 'Late Late' team and boasts a live studio choir.

27th December 2007 -Westlife too good to be 2nd?

Westlife hasn't released a Christmas single because they don't want to lose to The X Factor winner, Simon Cowell has claimed.

According to Simon, the boy band - who topped the UK Christmas charts in 1999 with I Have A Dream - decided not to risk being runners-up to Leon Jackson whose track When You Believe is the hot favourite for the coveted festive number one spot.

The X Factor judge, who signed Westlife to Sony BMG in the 90s, said: "Everyone knows The X Factor winner is going to top the Christmas charts this year. The best anyone else can hope for is second spot."

However, Westlife claim they decided not to release a Christmas single because it would disrupt the promotion of their latest album Back Home.

Shane Filan said: "Our second single from the record is coming out in the middle of January. The year before we went with a two-string single strategy. You Raise Me Up was such a strong song that it nearly overshadowed our second single, which got to number two but just fell into Christmas and was forgotten."

Westlife have been left red-faced in a Christmas chart battle before.

In 2000, they failed to secure their eighth consecutive UK number one when Bob the Builder's Can We Fix It? beat What Makes a Man to the top spot. - BANG Media International

26th December 2007 -Westlife number one supporters

WESTLIFE are making ANOTHER comeback-by supporting the awards for the second year running. The lads-Kian, Nicky, Shane and Mark-performed at last year's bash and couldn't wait to get involved this year by meeting up with kids of Barnardo's supporters, Gemma Tizzard, 11, Phoebe, seven, and Chloe Manear, 10, Katie Brown and Emma Sharp, both eight. Chloe, from Upminster, London, said: "It's a dream come true."

26th December 2007 - Out with the holly

Out with the holly

DISAPPOINTMENT for one fan at THE WESTLIFE SHOW-LIVE after she discovered the band had sneaked round her house while she was out.

For, despite posing for photos, using her bathroom, leaving gifts and giving her car a makeover... the lazy feckers failed to tarmac her drive.

Still, the boys didn't have it all their own way. 'Cos back in that studio, a mere knickers-throw from their most devoted/mental fans, rarely can they have sung the words "Let me go home!" with such feeling.

Plus, they had to face gurning, shrieking Holly "Can I just say?" Willoughby.

Who proved that, truly, nothing gets past her: "Welcome back to The Westlife Show and look who's here: It's Westlife!"

And introduced each song with the words "Everybody give it up for..." Which leaves me no option but to make this plea: Holly Willoughby, give it up for...feck's sake.

Saturday, December 22 2007, 15:49 GMT

Westlife have promised that 2008 will be their biggest year yet.

Band member Kian Egan has revealed that the Irish lads will be celebrating their tenth anniversary with performances all over the world.

"2008 is probably our biggest year to date. It's 10 years since we got together, so we've got a big tour starting in Northern Ireland in February and then we go to the UK," Kian told Magic FM, in an interview which will be aired in full on Christmas Day.

"We could take in Europe, south-east Asia, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. The offers are there and we are just trying to fit it all in. We also have a special one-off show taking place in Dublin on June 4."

19th December 2007 - Having the time of their lives

Having the time of their lives
Article shortened

As most of us grumble about Christmas shopping, a group of life limited children from a hospice in Surrey were being given a very special festive t reat . . . a visit from Westlife and a trip to Disneyland Paris. CLARE HEAL talks to the families who now have some memories to treasure and the Chase organisation, w hich helps to make every day count for the sick youngsters

THERE will always be those who don't like Christmas . . . the kind of people who complain that it consists of nothing but an endless succession of rich and indigestible that no one likes anyway, plus thoughtless gifts from ungrateful relatives.

They might feel differently if they knew they had a very limited number of seasonal celebrations left to spend with their loved ones. In that case the time usually spent bickering over the turkey and wearing flimsy paper hats would be something not to be wasted.

The life-limited children and their families, who rely on the Chase organisation and its hospice, Christopher's, near Guildford in Surrey, know that every day counts and anything you can do to enhance the time you have is important.

This is why Chase tries to make Christmas as special as possible for the children they look after . . .

who suffer from a wide range of conditions . . . and their families, laying on events that are not only exciting at the time but provide memories to last.

Last Sunday, Irish pop stars Westlife dropped by for a party to wish everyone a happy Christmas.

Bridget Turner, deputy chief executive officer of Chase, says: "We had 130 children there as well as their families and everyone was very excited.

Westlife were wonderful.

"Although they'd been to visit cancer wards and so on before, they'd never actually experienced a children's hospice, so we had to explain to them quite how long some of the children had been poorly. They were pretty blown away by it all but made the time to go round to each family group, about 45 in all, and spend time with them individually. We understand that they're a very busy band so were overjoyed when they originally said they could come for an hour . . . but they ended up staying for more than two."

Nicky and Shane both have young children so were particularly moved by the plight of a very sick ninemonth-old girl. "But they weren't at all patronising, " says Bridget, "they were great with everyone.

Particularly one young lady, whose 13th birthday it was that day. They sang Happy Birthday to her and she was so happy she burst into tears. The band then handed out signed CDs for everyone."

Six more Chase children were in for a treat the next day when they were whisked away for a surprise trip to Disneyland Paris.
