31st January 2008 - Westlife in boyband battle

IT'S the battle of the boy bands at the M.E.N. Arena after Westlife caught wind that rivals Take That's record-breaking 27 performances had knocked them off the top spot.

Local lads Take That were crowned Most Successful Act in the History of the M.E.N. Arena last December when their sold-out Christmas shows brought their total Arena performances to 27, beating the previous record of 24 shows held by Westlife.

But now, after hearing they'd been knocked off the top by their Manchester counterparts, the Irish superstars have added a third Manchester date to their 2008 tour - bringing their total number of Arena dates level with Take That.

Tickets for Westlife's show on Friday May 23, their third of 2008, go on sale on Friday, February 1 at 9am.

Westlife play the M.E.N. Arena on Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16, then Friday, May 23. £40 - £50. Call the Box Office on 0870 060 1768 or click here.

30th January 2008 - Is Westlife star Kian Egan losing his golden locks?

Last updated at 15:25pm on 30th January 2008

He shot to fame as a fresh-faced heartthrob, but it appears age is now catching up on Westlife's Kian Egan.

The 27-year-old singer showed clear signs of male-pattern baldness as he emerged from London's Dorchester Hotel yesterday.

Balding: Kian Egan, leaving the Dorchester Hotel in London yesterday, is clearly losing his locks. Right: the star sporting a full head of hair in 2001

But he's not the only member to lose his grip on his boy band appearance - Mark Feehily, 27, showed hints of a growing paunch after attending the South Bank Show Awards that same day.

Still, the group appear to be happily embracing a more settled, comfortable life.

Kian proposed to his Hollyoaks star girlfriend Jodi Albert earlier this month after more than four years together.

Babies on board: Nicky Byrne with his twin sons Rocco and Jay yesterday

No date has been set but the wedding is planned for 2009.

He said at the time: "I'm over the moon that Jodi said yes and I look forward to spending the rest of my life with her."

He follows the footsteps of bandmates Shane Filan and Nicky Byrne, both 28, who married their long-term girlfriends in 2003. Mark is in a relationship with partner Kevin McDaid.

Last year, Nicky became a father to twin boys, Rocco and Jay.

30th January 2008 - Duff Hits South Bank for Day’s Second Joan Prize

Straight after collecting her Best Actress prize at today
’s Critics’ Circle Awards, Anne-Marie Duff jumped in a car from the Prince of Wales theatre to the Dorchester Hotel and another lunchtime ceremony, the 12th annual South Bank Show Awards, where she collected the day’s second major award for Saint Joan.

The South Bank Awards, now in their 12th year and run by the ITV cultural programme, honour the UK’s creative talent across a wide range of the arts. Duff – accompanied at both ceremonies by her actor-husband James McAvoy (pictured with Duff), most recently seen on screen in Atonement - accepted the Theatre trophy on behalf of the rest of the cast and creative team of the National Theatre’s production of Shaw’s Saint Joan, which ran in the NT Olivier last year as part of the Travelex £10 Season.

The big – non-theatre – excitement at the South Bank Awards was the presentation of Outstanding Achievement in the Arts to Harry Potter author JK Rowling. The Awards also cover Film, Comedy, TV Drama, Pop Music, Literature, Classical Music, Visual Arts, Opera and Dance. There are special prizes for diversity (Arts Council England Decibel Award) and newcomers (The Times Breakthrough Award).

The South Bank Show Awards ceremony will be aired, as part of the ITV1 arts programme hosted by Melvyn Bragg, this Sunday February 2008, including featured performances by Westlife and Andrea Bocelli.

Anne-Marie Duff has also been nominated for Best Actress in the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards, the only major theatre prize-giving decided by the public, for which online voting concludes on 10 February 2008, with winners unveiled on 22 February just before our first-ever Year on Year Concert, attended by numerous nominees and winners.

30th January 2008 -Loife's Hot Chip off the block

WESTLIFE had better watch out. Egghead dance music bods HOT CHIP have them in their sights.

Their collaboration with KYLIE MINOGUE was ditched from her album X - and now they have vowed to land Ireland’s premiere balladeers.

Chipper FELIX MARTIN told me: “We’ve got a song called Bendable Poseable on the new record. I’d really like Westlife to cover it.

“A boy band version, with the moves, would be immense.”

Well, it would certainly be a welcome respite from KIAN EGAN and Co’s normal lung-busting fare. And don’t rule out new Kylie material cropping up in the future, though.

Frontman JOE GODDARD added: “We’d really like to get a track done with her.”The lads have an admirably unique way of describing their tuneage. According to them, their new single is, among other things, highly nutritious.

Felix added: “Some of the songs are like vegetables that have been left in the cupboard. Ready For The Floor is like a potato.”

They could call the remix Chips - I like the sound of that.

29th January 2008 -Toon Army calls on chef Rankin to kick off fashion event

By Maureen Coleman

Celebrity chef Paul Rankin will be swapping his kitchen for the catwalk when he joins the Newcastle United football stars for a charity fashion show in March.

Toon Army fan Paul, who we've mocked up in a Newcastle kit, has volunteered his services for the Fashion Kicks event at St James' Park on March 4.

Irish chart-toppers Westlife will alsob be joining the Newcastle players and Paul on the catwalk to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Tyneside Appeal, of which Shay Given is patron.

Last year's event raised over £200,000. This year the Teenage Cancer Trust will also be a beneficiery of the glittering event.

Cruise Clothing will again provide the clothes for the fashion show, which will preview spring/summer collections of Armani, Boss, Prada and D&G. Multi award-winning Hooker & Young Hair Design will be making sure the models are suitably coiffeured to take to the catwalk. The event is being supported by Shay's Kit Sponsor, Brake Fresh Ideas.

The appearance of Westlife, who will be taking time out from their busy schedule to strut their stuff, will also boost what is expected to be a sell-out show. Shay said: "I'm really thrilled the players have agreed to help me raise valuable funds for charity.

"We were all a little bit worried about taking to the catwalk last year, but once we were up there, we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it's a great feeling to know we are contributing to something meaningful and helping others."Paul said he wasn't too nervous about his modelling slot.

"I'm a good friend of Shay's so was delighted to help out.

"I'm looking forward to geting up there. It will be good fun and is for a good cause."

Nicky Byrne from Westlife added: "We are great friends with Shay and are all really excited about getting involved in the show.

"We can't wait to join up with Shay and the other players for what will be a fabulous evening."

29th January 2008 - Brian to support Boyzone in May

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

By Maureen Coleman

He may have turned his back on his own boy-band career, but Brian McFadden is set to support the reformed Boyzone in Belfast this May.

The former Westlife star, who sensationally quit the chart-topping pop band to go solo, has just been confirmed as the support act at the Odyssey Arena on Sunday, May 25 and Monday, May 26.

The Belfast dates will kick-off Boyzone's reunion tour, which they announced shortly after getting back together for Children In Need last November.

Dubliner McFadden, who is engaged to Australian popstar Delta Goodrem, has recently finished writing and recording his second album, produced by Stuart Crichton, in both Australia and the UK.

He has also chosen his fiancee's home continent to be the backdrop for the first video from the album.

While with Westlife, McFadden sold over 30m records and picked up 12 UK number ones. His debut solo album, Irish Son, produced the number one smash, Real To Me, as well as the top five singles, Irish Son and Almost Here.

Although his own pop career stalled in the UK, he has had success as a song-writer with his song, Demons, being featured in the US hit series Lost.

In addition he has written songs for artists such as Il Divo and Girls Aloud as well as the theme for the Commonwealth games. McFadden also co-wrote six of the 12 tracks on Delta Goodrem's latest album, Delta, which went to number one in the album charts in Australia.

At the age of 27, McFadden is now planning to embark on the next stage of his career and is hoping his support slot with Boyzone will help him do this.

Tickets for the shows are on sale now, priced £38 and £35.50.

Meanwhile, his former band Westlife are gearing up for their three dates at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, kicking-off on Monday, February 25.

29th January 2008 - Going down in blades of glory

Going down in a blade of glory  **article shortened

The downsides were: Westlife claiming Torville & Dean skating past them was "scary"; the news that Linda Lusardi was "dancing to Candyman"; and Aggie and her partner looking like two of the Spiders From Mars.

Steve Backley bopping to Mony Mony was so stiff he looked like one of the Transformers.

Who's popping in for a pint and a packet of peanuts with the Pub Landlord this week?

You may think Ireland's most famous export is Guiness - but you'd be wrong. Al's first guests are boy band Westlife, who were signed by Simon Cowell and managed by his best mate/X Factor nemesis, Louis Walsh, enjoying 14 number one singles to date.

Other guests include Match of the Day 2 host Adrian Chiles, Lib Dem MP Lembit Öpik and Gabriela Irimia from the Cheeky Girls.

Expect the usual Landlord fun and frolics of quick-fire interaction with the studio audience and a live performance from chart-storming music act The Feeling, this Friday at 10pm.

28th January 2008 - New kid in the celebrity champagne playground

**Article shortened***

It seems that Lillies and Renards aren't the only places to see and be seen anymore, writes Larissa Nolan

For so long, there were only two exclusive night-time playgrounds in which the rich, talented and famous could see and be seen in Dublin.

In the capital's small but buzzing social scene, it was either the snooty Lillies Bordello, or its slightly edgier counterpart, Renards -- both fashionably located around the Grafton Street area, both accessible to those in with the in-crowd.

And then, apparently overnight, a new kid in town arrived on the scene.

That new kid was Krystle nightclub, which, since last summer, is suddenly the place to be for young, gorgeous, funky wannabes.

Lillies Bordello has the longest history, operating as a high-end club for more than 15 years.

Dave Morrissey of Lillies believes that the formula for running a successful exclusive club is simple: good, attentive service, efficient, welcoming staff, comfortable surroundings, discretion and a range of little extras -- from issuing snazzy membership keys to its members to serving higher-quality alcohol such as Ketel One vodka, Perrier Jouet champagne and Bombay Sapphire gin.

It seems he is getting it right -- Lillies is still the number one port of call for visiting celebrities as well as homegrown ones, with regular patrons like U2, all of Boyzone, Westlife and Girls Aloud, as well as -- to quote Dave Morrissey-- "every famous person that has ever been out on the town in Dublin".

"The Meteors after-show has been held in Lillies traditionally. It will be interesting to see if they are there this year," she said.

"TV Now magazine held their after-show in Krystle this year, which put a few noses out of joint."
