2008 :Artist
mum of Prince William's girl Kate paints the town red in
Dublin |
|
We had an artist with some serious
blue-blood connections painting the town red this week.
Kate Middleton's mum Carole jetted into Dublin yesterday
to attend a glitzy lunch in Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud.
Although her pretty daughter has been dating hunky
Prince William for more than five years, Carole couldn't
have been more down to earth as she chewed the fat with
other guests in the eatery. She was joined by her fellow
artist pal Gemma Billington at the annual Cill Rialaig
lunch, which was presided over by gallery owner Noelle
Campbell-Sharpe.
Also spotted at the event in the Michelin-starred
restaurant were Krystle co-owners Rangan Arulchelvan and
Eileen Wright as well as Leigh Arnold and Marcus
Sweeney.
One surprise attendee at last Saturday's depressing
rugby match against New Zealand was Westlife crooner
Shane Filan.
The pop star, who became a father of two after wife
Gillian gave birth to a baby girl in September, was
spotted at a VIP event in the O2 area of Croke Park on
Saturday evening.
And he told the Diary how he couldn't wait to see the
game as it was his "first time to see Ireland play
live".
But despite the abysmal match, which saw Ireland
defeated 3-22, Shane still agreed to hop up on stage to
be interviewed by RTE's Des Cahill, who joked how he
"felt like Pat Kenny" quizzing a celebrity.
The pop star explained how much he and the rest of the
lads were enjoying a well-deserved year off from their
hectic schedule -- but revealed that they might be back
in the studio recording again, sooner rather than later. |

2008 :No life
on our own |
|
*some of the words were missing from
scan so i tried to make the best sense i could. *
Westlife's Nicky Byrne says the fans dont like the
remaining members enough to make them a sucess as solo
artists.
The crooner reckons it just wouldnt work, if someone
followed the lead of Brian Mcfadden, and tried to carve
out their own career.
Singer Nicky Byrne made the statements as he ruled out
any break up plans for Westlife, who are now in a year
long break.
He told the irish sun "We have been together for 10
years and thats how long we have worked. "
"There are always people coming to you with bigger plans
but they never work out. "
"We are a success as Westlife and our fans dont like us
enough individually as Mark, Shane and Kian to allow to
make a solo career.."
"We would be nothing on our own in the pop industry. "
The father of two has just been announced as the host of
the Cheerios CHildline concert ar Dublins 02 in
December,
Although he has presented before he admits he is
honoured to have been asked as the show will be the
first one to be held at the new venue replacing The
Point.
NERVOUS:
"Boyzone and Shayne Ward are amongst those lined up to
perform, and we are expecting the concert to be
something really special. It will go down in the books
as the first gig there and i will be nervous before
hand. "
"I know i was on the night before when i presented the
show with Brians ex wife Kerry Kattona, but we havent
kept in touch, and i have no idea what is going on in
her life.
"
"Im loving spending time with Georgina and Rocco and
Jay, at our holiday home in Portugal. "
Westlife's loyal fans can rest easy and Nicky says they
will have a comeback which will blow the fans away,.
"When we got on the stage at Croke Park for our last
concert, something just hit us. "
"It was such a buzz, and we wanted to do more and bigger
tours all over Europe .."
Rivals including Boyazone and Take That, are stormng up
the charts, he admits it puts him off.
"i suppose you'd be curious to find out what others are
dong and check it out."
"I always want to see Boyzone do well and i have always
said that, "

2008 :Louis'
girl band hoping to avoid Boyzone Late Late
embarrassment |
The infamous Late Late Show clip haunts Boyzone to this
day.
But there's no fear of history repeating itself, as
Louis Walsh's new and much hyped girl band will be
polished to perfection when they make their long-awaited
debut on the show.
The as yet unnamed band were scheduled to make their
debut on the Late Late Show last week.
However, their appearance was postponed a few days
beforehand.
"They were scheduled to appear last Friday for quite a
while, but it was not to be. However, we have been told
they will be ready to go with their Late Late date on
Friday, December 5," a show insider told the Herald.
Perhaps Louis didn't want a repeat of the Boyzone
debacle on the Late Late when they were first unveiled
by host Gay Byrne.
Hundreds of thousands of viewers and a studio audience
were left bemused after Louis unveiled Ireland's first
boy band to an unsuspecting public.
Dressed in the fashions of the time, Ronan, Keith,
Shane, Mikey, Stephen and Richard Rock (who was dropped
soon after) pranced around the studio to some dance
music.
The band's first appearance on the Late Late in 1993 has
now gained notoriety, thanks to their poor dancing
performance. Recently, when they appeared on Jonathan
Ross's TV chat show, the host put the clip on for
everyone in Britain to see while Boyzone squirmed.
But Louis' new girl band should have no such fears, as
they are being groomed for pop success.
The band are You're a Star songstress Sharon Condon,
Kasey Smith, Dublin singer Corrina Duran, Leigh Learmont
and Kian Egan's girlfriend Jodi Albert. Given Walsh's
previous successes with Westlife and Boyzone, it should
come as no surprise that a number of music labels are
interested in the girls.
Previously, pop impresario Louis Walsh has said that
he's determined his new Irish girl band, which he's
setting up with Simon Cowell's support, will wipe the
floor with the competition.
Talent
"We're looking for talent," he said. "Undiscovered
talent, young with a good attitude and who will look
good. We don't want good -- we want great."
Thousands of girls from all around the country flocked
to the Tripod in the city centre for their chance to
audition for Louis' new band, before they were
eventually whittled down to five.
Recently, the girls have been spotted being put through
their paces by Louis and Kian at Tripod and enjoying
lunch at nearby Caesar's restaurant.
In the meantime, Louis is also a judge on top TV3
programme The X Factor.

2008 :Shane
Filan presents 25,000 to Sligo Rovers |
Westlifes Shane Filan presented a cheque for 25,000 euro
to Sligo Rovers at their end of season function in the
Radisson last night.
Avid Westlife collector Gavin Walsh recently donated his
collection spanning over 10 years to Sligo Rovers and
Westlife snapped it up earlier this week.
On the back of their 2-0 win over Bray Wanderers last
Friday and Bohemians victory over Cork City, Rovers will
now be playing European football next season.
The 1983 team were honoured last night as Sligo Rovers
celebrated 25 years.
The club had a difficult year financially but Westlifes
contribution of 25,000 euro will no doubt prove vital
for an even better season next year.
Speaking to Ocean FM News Shane Filan said that it is
great to give something back to his local club. |

2008 :Westlife
snap up own souvenirs |
Westlife have splashed out €25,000
to buy a rare collection of the
band's memorabilia -- and it will
all mean a financial bonanza for
Sligo Rovers.Band member, Shane
Filan, confirmed to THE SLIGO
CHAMPION that the four Westlife
members had agreed over the week-end
to make an offer for the collection
and they were delighted that a deal
had been finalised.

"We first saw the collection five
years ago and were very impressed by
it. When we heard it was going up
for auction, we decided to make an
offer and the fact that the money is
going to Sligo Rovers is an added
bonus. It's a win-win situation for
everybody and we're thrilled to have
the collection.
"When I heard the memorabilia was
going to be auctioned, I contacted
the other lads in the band and we
were all 100% agreed that we should
make an offer.
"Our view was that it was better for
the collection to end up with
Westlife than anywhere else. We can
now put it together with all the
other memorabilia we have ourselves
so that the complete collection will
be in safe keeping. It's hard to put
a price on these things but it is of
great sentimental value for us",
said Shane.
The collection represents ten years
of dedicated work for local
collector, Gavin Walsh, who
assembled the rare memorabilia
through a network of over 6,000
collectors from all over the world.
Mr. Walsh donated the collection to
Sligo Rovers Financial Support Group
and they in turn negotiated the sale
to Westlife.
"Fair play to Gavin for donating the
collection to help Rovers", said
Shane. "He put in a huge amount of
effort assembling the memorabilia
and it was a terrific gesture on his
part to pass it on to Rovers"
The extensive collection includes
rare posters and promotional
material from Westlife's early
world-wide tours.
A well-known collector of music
memorabilia, Mr. Walsh has no
interest in football but was anxious
that a local cause should benefit
from his collection.
"I have no interest in soccer but I
know what Sligo Rovers mean to the
town and the local community and
that's why I donated the collection
to them. I'm delighted that they
have reached agreement with Westlife
to buy the memorabilia. I don't
think the collection could find a
better home", said Mr. Walsh.
He explained that he had assembled
the collection out of a sense of
civic pride.
"Westlife are the best thing to ever
come out of Sligo and as a music
collector, I felt I had an
obligation to get as much of their
material as possible.
"It was a labour of love putting it
all together over the years and I
will feel some sense of loss now
that I've let it go. But it has gone
to a very appropriate home and will
benefit Sligo Rovers into the
bargain", he said.
Westlife's Shane will attend Rovers
FAI Cup Silver Jubilee function in
the Radisson Hotel on Sunday evening
when the official hand over of the
collection will take place.
RTE's Northern editor, Tommie
Gorman, and sports broadcaster,
Adrian Eames, will be MCs on the
night and the evening's schedule
will include footage of the epic
1983 semi-final game against Cobh
Ramblers, the final against
Bohemians and the memorable
homecoming celebrations.
Tickets, costing €60, are available
from Caheny's Bar, EJs and Fiddler's
Creek.

2008 :Better
late than never - Boyzone break new ground for gay pop
stars (mentions Mark) |
The reunited Irish "boy" band Boyzone have never been
beacons of progressive thought, but with the video for
their new single, Better, they have done something
rather groundbreaking. The storyline has each member
getting romantic with a sexy (fictional) partner, but
while four of the Boyz are paired off with girls,
Stephen Gately gets cosy with a man.
This isn't just the first time that Gately, who came out
in 1999 and is in a civil partnership, has been allowed
openly to express his sexuality in a video - it's the
first time any boyband star has done so.
I say "allowed" because, as recently as the mid-90s,
when Boyzone started, any inclination Gately - or any
other gay teen idol - might have had to be himself would
have received short shrift from their record company,
which depended on young girls fancying their chances
with the band. So he was portrayed as heterosexual in
videos such as 1997's Baby, Can I Hold You Tonight, in
which he was compelled to look beseechingly through a
mirror at a female model. The closest he ever came to
openness was in the No Matter What video, where he sings
straight to camera: "I can't be who I'm not."
But for decades, being who they weren't was part of the
deal for gay teen stars. In his Wham! days, George
Michael spent a good deal of onscreen video time
snuggling up to women, and in Last Christmas even made a
convincing showing of being heartbroken when his
"girlfriend" cheated on him. No wonder that a teenaged
Geri Halliwell wanted to marry him. As she said years
later: "I thought he was straight. How wrong could I
have been?"
Boyzone's Better may be a sign of how far we've come
since the days when Elton John had to cast a woman as
his love interest in the Nikita video, but don't expect
it to be widely emulated. With less to lose than an
ascendant new band, it was easy for Boyzone to do the
right thing by Gately. The few other established
groups with openly gay members tend to tread lightly
around the subject. Westlife, whose Mark
Feehily came out a couple of years ago, get
around the issue by not showing the band in romantic
situations. For the reputed handful of closeted pop
stars who are still weighing up the idea of coming out,
that may also be the happiest compromise.

2008 :Sale of
Westlife rarities to aid club |
SUPERGROUP Westlife have been urged to help their local
cash-strapped soccer club by buying some rare band
memorabilia when it goes up for auction next week.
Avid collector Gavin Walsh from Sligo has agreed to
donate his Westlife collection to raise money for Sligo
Rovers at an auction next week to mark the club's 80th
birthday and the 25th anniversary of their 1983 FAI Cup
win over Bohemians.
The collection, worth an estimated €30,000, comprises up
to 250 rare and one--off items of memorabilia, including
Latin American and Asian posters, magazine covers and
singing doll replicas of the Sligo group.
Mr Walsh (43), who has what is believed to be the
biggest collection of Sex Pistols memorabilia in the
world, said: "I felt it was my civic duty to collect
these guys so I went on an eight-year binge, collating,
cataloguing and collecting everything relating to
Westlife".
He was once approached by a representative for the band
to buy the collection.

2008 :The girl group Louis Walsh really cares about |
Why X Factor losers Bad Lashes and Girlband were doomed from the start
Saturday, 1 November 2008
Louis Walsh lost both of his girl groups in the first two weeks of The X Factor
live shows, but Now can reveal that he never had a real incentive to get Bad
Lashes and Girlband over the first hurdle.
The mentor's energies were focused on the as yet unnamed girl group he’s put
together.
‘The last thing Louis would’ve wanted was for a girl band to triumph on The X
Factor and take the shine off his new group,’ says an insider. ‘They never got
Louis’s full attention or expertise because he’s been focused on his own group
since July.’
Initially, Louis, 56, joined forces with Westlife’s Kian Egan to create a group
that could knock fellow judge Cheryl’s band Girls Aloud off their pedestal.
Instead, they’ll be hoping to fill the void the band will leave when they split.
After auditioning more than 700 girls in Ireland this summer, 5 were chosen:
Kasey Smith, Corrina Durran, Sharon Condon, Leanne Learmont and ex-Hollyoaks
star Jodi Albert – who just happens to be Kian Egan’s fiancée.
‘These girls have been practising around the clock,’ says our insider.
Louis’s obviously already over any disappointment about only having boyband JLS
left in The X Factor. He has huge confidence in Jodi and co.
‘My new band will be massive next year,’ he tells Now. ‘Four Irish girls and
Jodi – they’re incredible.’

2008 :Brian McFadden's fan fear |
Saturday, 1 November 2008Brian McFadden claims
Westlife's fans were "nuts" when he was in the band.
The 28-year-old singer - who left the Irish group in 2004 -
admits some of their fans were over-zealous when he was a
member, and he much prefers the older audience he performs to
now.
He said: "Back in the Westlife days I might have thought 'not
you again', because the fans did get a bit much. But they were
very young, of course. It's not like that now because a lot of
my fans are in their 20s or my age. But yes, back in the
Westlife days it was like, 'Oh my God, here they come again -
they're nuts!' "
Brian has grown up a lot since leaving the band, and feels he
was quite immature when he first became famous.
He said: "I was only 17 when we started and I went through
until I was 24 or 25. I was much younger back then. Even though
I'm only 28 now, all that seems like a long time ago. That was
like the college days of my life. I appreciate everything a lot
more now."
