An Irish composer who penned one of the best selling tracks around the globe has been honoured on an exclusive list of international lyricists.

Brendan Graham, who wrote You Raise Me Up, has been awarded Million-Air status by the American Performing Rights Society, BMI. Only the world's top songwriters make the list when a track has been broadcast more than a million times on American radio.

You Raise Me Up, with music by Secret Garden's Rolf Lovland, was first recorded by Secret Garden featuring Brian Kennedy. Over the past six years more than 300 recordings of the single were made by some of the world's biggest acts including Josh Groban, Westlife, IL Divo, Paul Potts, and Celtic Woman. It has racked up sales of more than 80 million copies.

When Westlife star Nicky Byrne became the first of the Irish pop quartet to turn 30, he celebrated in style with a lavish bash attended by family, friends, and fellow band members Shane Fian, Kian Egan and Mark Feehily. Also there to witness the champagne corks popping, was HELLO! magazine.

This week's issue, number 1045, contains fabulous pictures from the surprise-packed party, planned down to the last detail by Nicky's wife Georgina. There's also a full report on the fun evening, which marked the first time the birthday boy had seen his bandmates since June.

"It's great to see the band again," says Nicky, who - along with the rest of the lads - will spend a year out of the limelight to concentrate on personal projects. "For the past ten years, we've spent so much time as a foursome that we know each other better than some siblings."

IT’S been an annual tradition for the past 43 years.

Turkey, Brussels sprouts, a minor family row and the Top Of The Pops Christmas Special.


But now BBC Scrooges are axing the iconic show.


A festive telly schedule without the Pops is like Christmas pud without brandy butter — bland and stodgy.


BBC top brass pulled the plug on the weekly TOTP in July 2006.

But the Christmas Day shows were continued so well-fed viewers could find out who had won the year’s biggest chart battle.


Last year a sterling line-up including KAISER CHIEFS, GIRLS ALOUD, THE PROCLAIMERS and KATE NASH kept the flame alive.


But this year there will be nothing to drown out the sound of grandads snoring in living rooms across the land.


So today I beg the BBC: Don’t Kill Off The Pops.

I’ve spoken to a host of stars who back my campaign.


STATUS QUO legend FRANCIS ROSSI — whose band release their first festive single, It’s Christmas Time, in December — is not a happy rocker.


He said: “We can’t believe the Christmas Top Of The Pops is not happening this year — it’s a festive fixture.


“It took us 40 years to write a Christmas song then the moment we do the programme gets axed.


“We totally support Bizarre’s campaign. If you don’t succeed we won’t be able to add to our total of 106 TOTP performances. Bah humbug!”


WESTLIFE’s MARK FEEHILY — who landed the Christmas top spot in 1999 with I Have A Dream — was also outraged.

He said: “Christmas Top Of The Pops has been a highlight of the festive schedule for music fans. If it goes it will be a massive shame.


“It was a sad day when they scrapped the weekly show, but getting rid of the Christmas special will leave a massive gap in the hearts of pop lovers. Soon there will be nothing left of the great TV music shows.”


And X Factor champ LEON JACKSON — holder of last year’s Christmas crown with When You Believe — said: “I loved performing on the Christmas TOTP, it was one of the highlights of my year.


“I’ve watched the show every year on Christmas Day with my mum so I’ll be gutted if it’s not on.


“Christmas Day wouldn’t be the same without it.”


Last night a spokesman for the Beeb attempted to defend their decision.


He said: “Top Of The Pops was decommissioned in 2006 as it became clear that it no longer occupied the central role it once did.


“We said at that time the Christmas special would continue but would have to earn its place every year.


“This year it was felt that pop music would be better represented over Christmas by a special, eight-part series of TOTP2.”


I’m sorry. but STEVE WRIGHT rattling on over archive footage of old festive hits is simply not good enough.

24th october  2008 :Music feast recalled

MANY people will remember the EPRU stadium for the musical entertainment it has brought the city.

Shortly after returning from close to 30 years in exile, celebrity couple Letta Mbulu and Caiphus Semenya graced the Boet Erasmus Stadium with their presence, giving an electrifying performance.

Many more local and international performances attracted large audiences.

Port Elizabeth welcomed the year 2004 with a big New Year‘s Eve bash which included jazz artists Hugh Masekela, Ringo and Jimmy Dludlu.

Kwaito star Mandoza performed at the stadium for a Human Rights Day celebration in March 2004.

On New Year‘s Eve in 2005, Jimmy Dludlu returned with Gloria Bosman and Simphiwe Dana to wow the crowds.

The following year the stadium hosted star-studded shows, including a performance by Ronan Keating in January that year and the Unite of the Stars concert featuring British superstar Will Young, ‘80s pop stars Bananarama and Italian Patrizio Buanne in November. A month later, gospel sensations Bebe and Cece Winans performed there.

Multi-platinum rock band Nickelback were scheduled to perform that year, but the tour was put off when a band member suffered from exhaustion.

Last year was no different and Michael Bolton and Irish pop group Westlife performed at Algoa FM‘s 21st anniversary in March. The show was interrupted by rain.

In October, Grammy Award- winning artist Michael W Smith came to town and yet again the heavens opened during his performance, but did not disrupt the show.

This year Celine Dion gave an electrifying performance in front of a huge audience on February 27.

Chris Martin punched the editor of Q magazine after he made a joke about his wife Gwyneth Paltrow.

The Coldplay frontman reportedly lashed out at editor Paul Rees at the magazine's annual awards show earlier this month when Rees made a quip about Gwyneth's ex-fiance Brad Pitt.

During an acceptance speech at the Q Awards earlier this month - where Coldplay won the Best Album prize for 'Viva La Vida, Or Death And All His Friends' and were named the Best Act in the World Today - Chris declared his admiration for pop group Girls Aloud.

Later in the evening, Paul complimented the singer on his taste in women.

Chris revealed he has such a big crush on Girls Aloud his wife had said he was only allowed to leave her if it was for one of the group.

In return, Gwyneth - who dated a string of Hollywood hunks before she married Chris, including Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck and Luke Wilson - had chosen boy band Westlife as her fantasy group.

FORMER Taoiseach Bertie Ahern shared the limelight with his estranged wife Miriam and her partner, restaurateur Terry McCoy, at the annual CARI Ball in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin, at the weekend.

Miriam and Bertie's bestselling novelist daughter Cecelia was out of the country promoting her latest novel, but dad was on hand to support his support for the worthy cause long championed by mum Miriam.

The ever-glamorous Malahide socialite, who wowed onlookers in emerald-green, is the patron of the charity that funds counselling and support for children who have been the victims of sexual abuse.

Guests at Saturday's glitzy black-tie affair included the Aherns' other daughter, Georgina Byrne, who is the wife of Westlife singer Nicky Byrne, former Eurovision winner and 'X-Factor' judge Linda Martin, 'Tudors' star Natalie Dormer, and socialites Paul and Lisa Fitzpatrick.

The night's festivities were compered by TV3's Alan Hughes. With more than €100,000 raised for CARI, proceeds will go directly towards providing a year's therapy for 30 children.

An auction on the night raised €25,000, thanks to various donated items, including the flag -- signed by champion golfer Padraig Harrington -- which stood at the 18th hole of the US Masters when Harrington won the tournament earlier this year.

15th october  2008 :A BOMBSHELL is about to explode at the Brits.

Leading contender for the Outstanding Contribution award next year is X Factor supremo SIMON COWELL — a man who has never written a song.

The controversial choice will polarise the music industry, much of which despises Cowell’s brand of manufactured pop.

Previous winners include legends PAUL McCARTNEY, DAVID BOWIE, FLEETWOOD MAC, U2, STING, TOM JONES, PAUL WELLER, THE BEE GEES and OASIS.

GEORGE MICHAEL was originally lined up for the award after hanging up his mic following his 25 Live tour.

But his erratic evening antics have seen his name scored off the list.

Multi-millionaire music mogul Simon has been sounded out by the Brits Committee — a panel of the great and good in the music industry — to see if he would accept the gong.

And Mr Nasty was extremely positive about the approach, telling them he would love to take a bow at the glittering Earls Court bash next February.

A source said: “If Cowell gets the big gong it will cause an almighty stink in the music game.

“He will be the first svengali to win rather than an artist — the publicity worldwide would be enormous.

“X Factor is looking like it is having another weak year in terms of new stars so he is open to the idea.

“The timing is perfect to highlight the success of LEONA LEWIS in the US.”

I suppose it is one way to make sure Leona turns up at the February ceremony and, er, WESTLIFE.

And in his defence, Simon does have the biggest influence on the charts today.

Critics would argue ZIG & ZAG, THE POWER RANGERS, STEVE BROOKSTEIN, MICHELLE McMANUS and ROBSON and JEROME is not the greatest of rosters.

Perhaps this should be the year for rock lords LED ZEPPELIN or PINK FLOYD to be recognised.


Zep have been massively influential with bands such as KINGS OF LEON, RACONTEURS and OASIS and the death of Floyd founder member RICHARD WRIGHT should be marked in some way.

It will be a spectacular U-turn by the high-trousered one if he does show up.

Back in 2002 he said: “I hate the Brit Awards. The whole voting system is peculiar.

“The Brits is the most boring night of my life. Same people, same outfits, same gossip.”

You only sing when you’re winning, eh Simon?

15th october  2008 :X Factor judges clash and celebs behaving badly

Pop impresario Louis Walsh has admitted he is "shocked" after one of his acts became the first casualty of this year's hit show The X Factor.

And there was no shortage of tantrums and tension behind the scenes as we found out when the Diary was granted exclusive backstage access to all the action.

The Irish judge said he was dismayed that one of his bands, Bad Lashes, was booted off the show after failing to win over viewers at their first live outing.

The four-strong girl band were in the last two alongside one of Louis' other entrants -- Girl Band.

But producers had to resort to checking the overall voting figures after the Westlife manager refused to choose between the two -- resulting in the distraught hopefuls getting their marching orders.

"I was really surprised they were the first off as I thought they had a really strong chance," Louis told the Diary. "They have the right look and they sound great but I guess something just didn't gel for viewers.

"Traditionally, girl bands have always had a tougher time on the competition, for whatever reason and this obviously proves that theory. But the contest is only just beginning and I still think my remaining two acts will give the other finalists a real run for their money."

This year's first live show of the hugely popular series returned to our screens over the weekend, proving to be a real ratings hit for TV3 again.

Delighted Louis explained how last Saturday's show had met with an "unbelievable" reaction from fans.

"I've never got so many text messages from people. Everyone from Shayne Ward to Kian Egan has been sending me messages saying they really enjoyed it.

Sacked by their agent, Baz, Mark and Michael hit the pub only to find a poster advertising 'You're a Superstar' auditions in the city. So in a final attempt to hit the big time, the boys decide to form a boy-band!

As part of their research they travel to Belfast to see their hero's Westlife, and seek inspiration from their performance and their devoted fans. Gaining access backstage, the lads perform acappella for the band, and for music guru Louis Walsh who tells them they don't stand a chance.

In attempt to polish up their act, the lads start the make-over, and so begins rehearsals, fake tans, and botox! After exhaustive dance routines and vocal coaching, they audition in front of a celebrity panel only to be disgraced and told they will never be famous. Down and dejected, and feeling more lowlife than Westlife, the boys retreat once again to the pub. Here fellow auditionee, Mick, agrees to manage the guys and promises to get them a gig in front of 600 women. Only, a bingo hall isn't quite what the lads had in mind...!

X- Factor's only boyband JLS claim they are a challenge for their mentor Louis Walsh - but say he's told them not to change.

The soulful quartet - Marvi n Humes, 23, Jonathan Gill, 21, Ortise Williams, 21, and Aston Merrygold, 20 - say that Louis is totally behind them, despite being associated with 'traditional' boy bands such as Boyzone and Westlife.

"He's told us not to change, he's put us through on merit, on what he's seen us achieve," said Jonathan - aka JB, with Aston adding: "He wants us to be different to any other group that's been before - we're going to bring something new this year."

Ortise added: "We're a challenge for him - but I think he can see how he can make us a world-class act."

9th october  2008 :Celebrity chef Dylan gives Westlife Nicky a generous helping of abuse

Although it seems the most unlikely scenario in Irish showbiz, it appears that the knives were out between celebrity chef Dylan McGrath and Westlife star Nicky Byrne recently.

The Diary can reveal that the pair became embroiled in a "bizarre" verbal exchange after an encounter in the VIP area of Krystle nightclub, which has set tongues wagging.

A well-placed source placed the blame for the exchange firmly at the feet of the feisty Mint restaurateur, saying the Michelin-starred chef may have stirred things up with the chart-topping singer.

Nicky, dad to twins Rocco and Jay, was out celebrating his fifth wedding anniversary with wife, Georgina, alongside his famous in-laws Bertie Ahern and ex-wife Miriam, when the incident occurred in the Harcourt Street hot spot.

"Nicky and Georgina had been having a really lovely evening before this happened. A big gang of them went to Thornton's restaurant beforehand and had a gorgeous meal before deciding to continue the party in Krystle.

"They had a table reserved in the corner of the club and Nicky was just sitting there, minding his own business and having a few quiet drinks with pals when Dylan walked over to him.

"He said something like 'I know your face, I recognise you from the telly -- you're famous or something, aren't you?' but was being quite aggressive.

"Nicky initially ignored him but Dylan wouldn't let it go. Eventually, one of Nicky's friends stood up and told them just to leave them alone, that they were just enjoying a night out. At that stage, things got a little physical and a punch was thrown."

The club's security staff were quick to react to the situation and managed to calm things down between the two parties.

Yet the whole encounter left a bad taste in Nicky's mouth and he eventually decided just to call it a night and leave.

Afterwards he privately told pals that the incident had put a dampener on what should have been a night to remember for him and his wife.

"He said what made the whole thing so upsetting was that it was a really special night for him and Georgina, which they were enjoying with their families when the incident happened.

"In the end, he decided the best thing was just to go home as he wasn't sure if Dylan would just start up again or not, but he was really shaken by what happened.

"He has never got that kind of treatment before from someone he doesn't even know."

When contacted about the incident, the celebrity chef played down what happened.

He told the Diary how he "couldn't say anything about it" before adding how he had "no problem" with the boyband member.

A Krystle spokesperson confirmed there had been an incident between the pair, but it had been swiftly dealt with.

Meanwhile, the Diary can also reveal that Nicky has signed a deal to feature photographs from his 30th birthday party in a UK glossy.

Neither did we , but i do appreciate everyone who voted. Im not sure if they did a list like last year with where each site came in in the top 100. but im hoping they did and someone can find out.
